The Opal Australian Paper Division is the home of Reflex and is a leading employer in the beautiful Latrobe Valley. With over 850 team members on site, the Maryvale Paper Mill is the largest manufacturing plant in the Opal portfolio.     


Maryvale Paper Mill is a complex electrical facility with over 50 HV/LV substations, 150 Transformers, 4000+ electrical motors, 600+ VSD’s, 100+ DCS/PLC controllers with an excess of 100 000 I/O controlling and monitoring all types of process instruments supported by 50MW onsite electrical power generation via steam turbines.


Become an integral part of the onsite Electrical & Automation Engineering team consisting of 15+ Electrical, Control System and Automation Engineers. The Automation Engineer uses technology to improve, streamline and automate the manufacturing process. You will be responsible for planning, implementation, and maintaining of such technology across the Maryvale Paper Mill.


You will contribute to the success of Opal by: 

  • Analysing installed and proposed plant for opportunities to improve its profitability through the optimisation and installation of electrical and automation equipment.
  • Strategically analyse proposed and installed hardware and software to ensure that these are able to be supported and maintained efficiently throughout the equipment lifecycle.
  • Lead and support improvement project teams with Automation Engineering knowledge, skills and experience in order to achieve world-class outcomes.
  • Develop and review Functional Descriptions, and use these to Program and Commission code on PLC, DCS and DCS VSD systems.
  • Actively participate in maintaining PLC, DCS and VSD systems with fault finding, installation and commissioning.
  • Develop Designs, Scopes of Work, Cost Estimates and Expenditure Submissions for Electrical and Automation improvements projects.

  • Minimum of 5+ years of post-graduate experience as an Electrical, Control Systems or Automation Engineer.
  • PLC, and DCS coding experience.
  • Experience with motor control and field instruments (valves, flow, level pressure transmitters etc)
  • Experience within heavy industrial manufacturing environments.
  • Trouble-shooting ability and root cause analysis skills.
  • Strong Safety focus.
