An opportunity has arisen for a Graduate Research Engineer / Scientist to join our Research and Technology Centre. You will be responsible for the delivery of research projects for Paper, Corrugated and related business units. In this role you will be exposed to analytical and investigative tasks to generate innovative value-added technology-based solutions while supporting laboratory testing in a range of technical capabilities.

You will contribute to the success of Opal by:

  • Develop, promote, and maintain safe work practices that contribute to an accident and an injury free workplace.
  • Leading and contributing to technical projects/research to develop/improve products/services.
  • Pro-actively provide innovative value-added solutions to the business and clients with specialised knowledge on the manufacture and use of nanomaterials for papermaking.
  • Prosecute project plan and testing methods.
  • Provide innovative solutions where testing methods are not clearly specified.
  • Complete Technical projects for Opal and external customers delivered both on time and to budget.
  • Present Technical information to customers (internal or external) in a clear and articulate way, where required.

  • Degree qualification or higher in Science/Engineering or similar plus 1–2-year experience preferably in the field of Fibre/Paper material.
  • Demonstrated problem solving ability including devising new test methodologies and apparatus.
  • Ability to scope and manage performance to project plan.
  • Strong skills in data collection, analysis and interpretation including strong computer skills.
  • Ability to produce high level technical written reports and oral presentations incorporating understanding from both local testing and reference literature. 
  • Ability to work with a considerable independence in approach, with a high level of originality, ingenuity, and judgement.
