We have an exciting opportunity for an Environment and Sustainability Specialist who will be responsible for maintaining Opal’s key sustainability compliance certifications, systems and memberships including FSC and  PEFC certification, compliance with the Illegal Logging Prohibition Act, Compliance with the European Union Deforestation Regulations, Compliance with the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation obligations and Managing the Australasian Recycling Label program.  

 

The role also acts as the owner of the “Circularity” pillar managing our sustainability strategy in the areas of product and packaging circularity and sustainability, and developing Opal’s Waste reduction strategy.

 

The key focus of this role will be to:

  • Maintain Opal’s FSC and PEFC Chain of Custody system. Including site support.
  • Organise annual internal audit program and external CoC audits by Opal’s Certification Bodies.
  • Ensure our CoC system also satisfies the due diligence requirements of the Illegal Logging Prohibition Rules with regard to Domestic Processing (Maryvale wood supply) and Importing (in conjunction with procurement and purchasing teams), and the European Union Deforestation Regulation
  • Prepare and submit Opal’s annual APCO report and action plan.
  • Develop Opal’s Waste reduction targets as part of the Circularity Sustainability Pillar

For this role we would ideally like you to have:

  • Several years’ industry experience in sustainability systems preferred
  • Tertiary qualified, preferably Sustainability, Environmental Science or similar
  • Management of Chain of Custody Certification Systems (FSC and/or PEFC) experience preferred
  • Management of APCO compliance requirements and reporting experience preferred
  • Team oriented but able to work independently as a Subject Matter Expert on Opal sustainability systems
  • Passionate about sustainability and positive stakeholder engagement
